TWENTY-TWO

“Miss Marsh, are you even listening to a word I’m saying?” My adviser has been droning on for the last twenty minutes, and truthfully, I haven’t heard a single thing that’s come out of his mouth.

The only reason for these meetings is to keep my father in the loop as to how I’m getting on at the academy, I’m sure. I skipped out on the last one, and the one before that—but since Dad contacted me directly today, I figured it was best to show my face.

Though I wish I hadn’t.

“You seem very distracted,” he continues when I don’t answer him. He leans forward on his desk, eyeing me warily. “Are you having problems here, Fallon?”

You could say that.

“Nope, everything is good.”

“Okay, well my door is always open if you need anything. But for now, let’s go over your schedule and see what we can’t do to make sure you’re on track in all your classes.”

It’s only week three, yet somehow, I’m behind with all my work. Not only because I’ve skipped a few classes here and there, and haven’t bothered to do half of the coursework given; but also because of him.

Fucking Theodore.

The guy who fingered me in the academy dining hall in front of everyone and left me high and dry. This is becoming a habit of ours. He gets what he wants, then tells me to fuck off.

The most annoying thing, I’m enjoying it.

The thrill. The game.

Even his fucking rules.

I’m not stupid enough to believe that this afternoon wasn’t another punishment. It was aimed towards Adam, showing him I wasn’t his.

But it was as much for me.

And I loved it.

I’m sure I’m supposed to feel humiliated or angry that he put me on display in front of the student body and took me to the point of no return, but all I can think about is him doing it again and again. I want that, and I’m more annoyed at myself than anything.

He’s reeling me in, and I’m not strong enough to tell him no.

I’m not even sure I want to.

The bell rings, pulling me from my thoughts and back to the present.

“Am I alright to leave?” I ask Mr. Howell, wanting nothing more than to escape this office and go back to my dorm. He nods, telling me goodbye.

I rush through the halls, avoiding the eyes of people as I pass. Noah catches up to me when I find my way outside. Rain is falling in light drops, and I let my head fall back. The water splashes my face, chilling me instantly.

“Hey, baby girl,” he says when he reaches me. “Where have you been?”

“With my adviser. Dad insisted I go this week.”

Nodding, he drops his arm over my shoulder and walks us towards the dorms. I’ve avoided both my friends since lunch time, hiding out in the library instead of going to any of my classes or meeting up with them during break.

I know they will ask questions, and I just don’t have the answers.

“I’m not going to ask,” he says, staring down at me with a small smile on his face.
